Activities for youth in Palmdale and the 21st annual Poppy Festival in Lancaster are in direct competition with each other this Saturday. So take some time to clean up the environment with Palmdale on Saturday with your kids and then head on over to Lancaster on Sunday for some great fun and food!
The City of Palmdale will host three events in celebration of Global Youth Service Day on Saturday, April 21, and is inviting residents of all ages to participate.
“We’re excited to be part of the Global Youth Service Day activities as residents in cities across the nation get to work alongside each other to make a difference in their communities,” said Palmdale’s Community Programs Supervisor Trish Jones. “Here in Palmdale, residents may get involved in three of our City hosted events.”
“In addition to the events we’re hosting, we’re encouraging individuals and groups to create and facilitate their own project in observance of Global Youth Day,” said Jones. “If you register your youth-based project and schedule it between now and May 15, the City of Palmdale will recognize you at an upcoming City Council meeting.”
Registration is required and a waiver must be signed. Registration will be available online at www.cityofpalmdale.org. The scheduled events for Saturday include:

Meanwhile in Lancaster the 21st Annual Poppy Festival on Saturday and Sunday will feature a 370 foot long zip line, suspended 20 feet in the air, live sharks, a tribute to the ‘80s, plus over 400 food, craft and merchandise vendors.
“Communities are defined sometimes by how they handle the hard times and difficult times and it has been really important over the last four years for the city of Lancaster and this community to hold events and celebrations,” said Lancaster City Manager Mark Bozigian.
Classic rock Sunday returns with tribute band Hollywood U2 on the Poppy Stage at 1:30 pm followed by Evolution, a Journey tribute band at 3:30 pm. These are two of the top tribute bands for this genre. Other events include Kyra Sundance & Chalcy, a dog show; a classic car show, Jest in Time Circus; and over 400 vendors on 35 acres.
Other returning favorites include exotic animal encounters; a farmers market; bird shows; world cultural demonstrations; aviation exhibits; fine arts; and make-and-take crafts.
Taste of Lancaster will take place both days of the festival, with seating times at 11 am to 1 pm and 2 pm. to 4 pm. Various restaurants will offer fare ranging from ethnic selections to pasta and pizza, to delectable treats such as cupcakes for those with a sweet tooth. Of course, a wine tasting area will also be on site. For the low cost of $7, participants will receive ten tickets (one sample per ticket). Wine tasting is an additional $3 and will be limited to a maximum of two samples.
