The Latin Billboard Music Awards are set to be broadcast Thursday and Twitter wants you to know about it. Twitter has gone to their blog and set up the hashtag #Billboards2012 to try and promote the upcoming awards show.
The show is only being broadcast on Telemundo, so if you don’t speak spanish and aren’t a frequent viewer you would never know about it. But that’s the power of Twitter, set up a hashtag and get it trending and anything is possible.
This past Wednesday, soccer fans set a new Twitter record for the most tweets posted per second. Looking at my twitter feed I couldn’t help but follow the action as updates were pouring in all day.
After switching to my local Twitter feed of the Austin area the takeover of my timeline was even stronger. Having a large hispanic presence here made a considerable to difference to an already big event.
Both of these events would probably have gotten some coverage if they weren’t on Twitter, but nothing of this magnitude. In terms of breaking news, promotion of events and shear spreading of information Twitter is king.
