UMSL SOFTBALL – DOUBLEHEADER PREVIEW
Central Missouri Jennies (15-20) vs. UMSL Tritons (14-16)
Friday, March 30, 2012 – 1 pm – UMSL Softball Field
ST. LOUIS, MO. — The last two weeks haven’t been kind to the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s softball team, which has gone 2-6 in its last eight games (14-16 overall), while falling to seventh place in the GLVC West Division standings.
But the coming weekend brings a great opportunity for the Triton women to get back on the winning track and back over the .500 mark with a trio of home doubleheaders at the UMSL Softball Field on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Saturday and Sunday matchups are GLVC clashes with West Division foes Drury and Missouri S&T, respectively.
With a winning effort against the Panthers and Lady Miners, UMSL could move back into the top half of the GLVC West race and again put themselves in position to play in the league’s postseason tournament in Peoria next month.
But before those critical league contests can happen, the Tritons will play a double-dip against cross-state rival Central Missouri, Friday at the UMSL Softball Field with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
UCM will come into today’s matchup with a 15-20 record, after going 3-6 in games against West Florida (1-3), Southern Arkansas (0-1), Northeastern State (2-0), and No. 12-ranked Central Oklahoma (0-2).
The Jennies, as UCM’s female teams are called, are led offensively by Braylyn Bivens, who boasts a .330 batting average and 16 stolen bases.
Jaydee Young is the Jens’ top power-hitter this year. She leads the club with 4 home runs, while Jakki Prater leads the team with 16 RBIs.
In the pitching circle, UCM is led by junior Sarah Espy, a righthanded fireballer, who leads the Jennies in starts, appearances, wins, and innings pitched.
The Olathe, Kan., native will likely start Game 1 for the Jens, while freshman Katie Shockley will likely get the start in Game 2.
For UMSL, a likely combination of Leslie Davis, Jena Boudreau, and Stephanie Benson will all pitch in some form or another in both ballgames.
Boudreau and Benson share the UMSL lead in wins with five apiece, while Davis leads the team in appearances and batting average against.
Other standouts at the play for UMSL this season have been Erin Driskell (.309 ba, 15 stolen bases); junior Haleigh Jenkins (.280 ba, 4 HR, 13 RBIs); freshman Katie Wood (.274 ba, 5 HR, 18 RBIs); and freshman Madison Zbaraschuk (.259 ba, 4 HR, 20 RBIs).
First pitch for Friday’s doubleheader is 1 p.m., while the Saturday and Sunday twinbills are both slated to begin at noon.
