Happening now, authorities have indicated that the package found in the mailroom of Turner Field isn’t dangerous. There is an on-going situation near downtown Atlanta at Turner Field. A suspicious package was discovered in the mail room of the ball park that is home to Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves. The package is reported as being solid and possibly containing a white powder. The Atlanta Fire Department in Hazmat suits are on the scene. According to news reports they have called for the bomb squad.
I first became aware of a situation at the park when I received a call from a Braves seasonal employee telling me that she and other Atlanta Braves seasonal staff were being locked down inside the press cafeteria at Turner Field. She arrived at the field just before noon to pick up her pay check. She was required to pick it up in person because this is the first pay day for the seasonal staff and their direct deposits have not kicked in yet. According to her, a security officer told the group of employees that they couldn’t leave the room. As it turns out the entire facility was locked down due to the suspicious package. The seasonal Atlanta Braves employees were being held on the club level for just over an hour before they were allowed to move to the outside. According to the employee they were not told why they were being locked in. She told me as she waited to be released,
There are about 30 of us inside the press cafeteria located on the club level. No one has told us anything about what’s going on.
When I informed her as to what was happening just outside of the field, she was surprised.
Turner Field is located just a few miles away from the State Capitol building where law makers were up until midnight to get bills passed on the last day of the session. The Atlanta Braves are scheduled for their first home game on Friday April 13 at 7:30 P.M. If you can attend the game in person it will air locally on WPCH Peachtree TV, Atlanta Comcast channel 7/802.
