Recently I was asked to estimate the cost of a trip to Florida. The question centered on the choice of flying or driving.
I calculated the fuel cost for he Lexus SUV in question by assuming it would get 22 miles per gallon and a round trip of 2600 miles. This would use 119 gallons and cost $476.00 at $4.00 a gallon.
I was taken back by this figure, as I have made this same trip often enough to lose count. Almost $500.00 to drive to Florida! A lot of people will be rethinking their vacation plans.
There are people out there expressing the belief that high fuel prices will encourage more use of alternative fuels. If you’ve been reading my articles you understand that there are no acceptable alternatives that don’t carry their own environmental burden.
Government should be focusing on the economic devastation that both families and business will incur at the current fuel prices. Government should focus on the affect that Wall Street speculation is having on fuel prices and impose regulations in the national interest.
The economy is already quite bad. If fuel prices continue to rise at the current rate things will get much worse. Doing what is necessary to reduce energy costs is in the national interest far more than the development of alternative fuels.
