Although many seemed surprised by pontifical tweeting earlier in the week, it may come as an even bigger shock that a fragrance is being created for Pope Benedict XVI. However, the scent created by Silvana Casoli, is customized for His Holiness only.
The 2012 Lenten message on Twitter is nothing new for the Catholic Church as the Vatican has taken to social media for some time now spreading the news from Rome. Apparently, manufacturing cologne for members of the Roman Catholic Church is not an unusual task either. According to The Huffington Post and The Telegraph, the perfume designer famous for creating scents for Sting, Madonna and King Juan Carlos of Spain, has already designed two fragrances for Church officials called The Water of Hope and The Water of Faith.
The papers reported Pope Benedict’s cologne was difficult for Casoli to fashion a scent that faithfully perpetuated the Pope’s personality and theological outlook.
“The cologne is meant to reflect the German pontiff’s love of the forests and animals from his native Bavaria, as well as peace and tranquility infused with lemon tree blossom and the aroma of spring grass; a pure and clean essence recalling the notion of peace.”
Perhaps the holy fragrance will be named just that: The Holy Fragrance, Peace in a Bottle or something along the lines of The Essence of Him. Either way, the cologne will never be made public.
Long Island Catholics looking to refill a Lenten supply of holy water can pick up an inexpensive plastic bottle at Joseph T. Reilly’s Religious Store on Rockaway Avenue in Valley Stream to fill with holy water at any Long Island Catholic church for free.
