There are natural disasters and man-made disasters. Sometimes, natural disasters can cascade and combine with human creations that multiply the negative effect. Earthquakes in Japan and the resulting consequences including nuclear meltdown at a power plant is an instance.
Seismologists are trying to improve their science though the gap between predicting possibilities and predicting actual events is large.

In the instance of Bhopal India, a chemical plant exploded killing 22,000 people in an instant. This was a man-made disaster.
“Shortly after the gas release, Union Carbide launched an aggressive effort to identify the cause. Engineering consulting firm, Arthur D. Little, Inc., conducted a thorough investigation. Its conclusion: The gas leak could only have been caused by deliberate sabotage. Someone purposely put water in the gas storage tank, and this caused a massive chemical reaction. Process safety systems had been put in place that would have kept the water from entering into the tank by accident.”

Throughout America, there are cities and populations resting upon areas prone to geological events and man-made catastrophe. The chance that something will happen of disastrous scale in one’s lifetime is convincingly real.
