One of the results of One Direction’s meteoric rise to fame is that the media and fans are now interested in hearing what One Direction family members have to say.
One Direction came in third place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. The group is on track to becoming the biggest-selling global act to emerge from “The X Factor.”
The mothers of One Direction’s Zayn Malik and Niall Horan have recently given interviews in which they talk about their sons’ fame and One Direction’s female fans.
Malik, 19, has a British mother, a Pakistani father and three sisters (one older and two younger). Horan, 18, is Irish and has an older brother. Horan and Malik currently live in London, but they come from suburban hometowns. Malik hails from Bradford, England, while Horan is from Mullingar, Ireland.
In an interview with ITV, Tricia Malik had this to say about how her son’s fame has affected her life:
“The only thing that’s changed sometimes is that I do get recognized when I’m out shopping. People will say, ‘Can I have a photo with you?’ The worst time for me is if I go to Zayn’s tour. I do get stopped outside and they say, ‘Can we have a photo with you?’ It’s quite flattering when people stop you and say, ‘Can I have a photo with Zayn’s mum or Zayn’s sisters?’ It’s quite scary, really, sometimes. I think we were in Wolverhampton, and me and my daughter had to be removed from security, because all the fans just stood up, and it was quite scary to think that you’re going to get mobbed by all the fans. So we had to be removed and moved up to a balcony …
“I do enjoy it. It’s not that bad. It’s not as bad as I thought as what I thought it would have been. I thought that every day when I’d come home from work, there’d be tons of girls outside and I wouldn’t be able to walk through my front door, but no, it’s not like that. When Zayn is home (and obviously, he tweets when he’s coming home), we have little bags left on the gate and maybe little girls coming, like last time with the birthday cake. But it’s not like you can’t live with it. It’s quite nice, actually.”
Meanwhile, Maura Gallagher (Horan’s mother) visited her One Direction son for two weeks in the United States when One Direction was on tour. She was one of the approximately 10,000 people in the audience when One Direction performed an outdoor show on “Today,” and Horan pointed her out during One Direction’s “Today” interview. She told the Herald that she is proud that he seems to be the most popular One Direction member with American fans:
“Niall’s was the only name I have heard being chanted there, it was especially nice because for me, it was great to hear that. Being the little Irish fella helped — I do think it’s because he’s Irish. They have given him so many green accessories, like hats, flags, leprechauns, the lot — everything goes into boxes and is given out to hospitals. He’s a great head on his shoulders too, he’s very humble and gives everyone a minute. I always warn him to be nice to the girls and always chat to them and pose for pictures …
“He had a girlfriend at home, from his school days, before he auditioned for X Factor. But then he was doing that and she was doing exams, so life is very different for him now. I don’t know if he sees much of her when he’s home, she was lovely, but they were only 16 at the time — there’s never anything too steady about a relationship at that age.”
In a February 2011 interview with Sugarscape, Horan said he broke up with the girl (who is not in the public eye) because he wanted to focus on his music career. “She was amazing,” he said. He has not had a serious girlfriend since he’s become famous.
As for Zayn, one of his ex-girlfriends is Rebecca Ferguson, who came in second place on “The X Factor” U.K. in 2010. He and Ferguson dated for about four months before breaking up in July 2011. In late 2011, there was a tabloid rumor that he was secretly dating Perrie Edwards of Little Mix (winner of “The X Factor” U.K. in 2011), but Edwards and her mother told the media that the rumor was not true.
